I hope you guys enjoy this song too. Have time to reflects and listen with your heart. Have a good new day today! God bless!

The beautiful video music:

The beautiful lyrics:

Every evening sky, an invitation
To trace the patterned stars
And early in July, a celebration
For freedom that is ours
And I notice You
In children’s games
In those who watch them from the shade
Every drop of sun is full of fun and wonder
You are summer

And even when the trees have just surrendered
To the harvest time
Forfeiting their leaves in late September
And sending us inside
Still I notice You when change begins
And I am braced for colder winds
I will offer thanks for what has been and was to come
You are autumn

And everything in time and under heaven
Finally falls asleep
Wrapped in blankets white, all creation
Shivers underneath
And still I notice you
When branches crack
And in my breath on frosted glass
Even now in death, You open doors for life to enter
You are winter

And everything that’s new has bravely surfaced
Teaching us to breathe
What was frozen through is newly purposed
Turning all things green
So it is with You
And how You make me new
With every season’s change
And so it will be
As You are re-creating me
Summer, autumn, winter, spring

People & Life

Making roof from plant leaves. A traditional way!
Wild ginger fruit. Very sour taste but yummy.
"Nasi bungkus" one of traditional way of preparing rice for
Murut community and almost all of Sabah ethnic.
The leaves is the same leaves used for the roof.
Wild ginger again. The "Bunga Kantan", one of my favorite.
Preparing wild ginger "tuhau" for meal. Chit chatting among friends
enjoying the work.
Fish from the river. Delicious and fresh fish.
Preparing rattan for building a hut for the wedding.
All these scenarios were captured from several of my visits to a few Murut villages at Ulu Tomani, Tenom, Sabah. Quite interesting community and sometimes makes me wondering on the way they make their living. Bikin pusing kepala juga working with this group of people. But still i feel blessed because God gave me this opportunity to met more of His people on this earth. To see more of characters of people that i can reflects on how i make my own living. On how i live my life. Making me grateful of what God gave me for these almost 30 years of my life. Thank you Lord Jesus Christ!

P/s: If it is not because of my Faith in Christ, i think i already quit from this job but God always make a way for me when i feel down and thinking of i can not stand for it anymore. He always there when i need Him the most and i am doing this because He loves me very much. In return i have to do something for His people, to love Jesus back. I love you Jesus. Amen.

Stop the Bully On Sabah & Sarawak

1

I received this email from a friend. Something to read. I don't know who is the writer but if you are Sarawakian and Sabahan, this is something to read. Happy Reading!!

MySinchew 2010-09-14

The time has come for Sabah to take control of her destiny. No more bully by the federal!.

The east Malaysian enigma.

I was born on the 2nd of August 1963 in a country called the Federation of Malaya. Six weeks later, on 16th September, the federation along with Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore merged to form Malaysia. A Malayan at birth, I then became a Malaysian. The date 16th September 1963 marked a significant transition. Indeed, there is a number of crucial differences between “Malaya” and “Malaysia”. While we often talk about the ‘social contract’— the unwritten agreement negotiated by our Independence-era leaders — we should also remember the terms upon which Sabah and Sarawak joined with Malaya to form Malaysia.

Basically, these states (along with Singapore, briefly) were persuaded to join ‘Malaysia’ because of these promises. Each was allocated specific rights and duties as per in the 20 and 18-point agreements that Malaya signed with Sabah and Sarawak respectively. Sarawak and Sabah theoretically enjoyed more rights than the existing states of the federation, like Johor or Pahang. Moreover these “points” were not trivial: there was to be no official religion in either state. English was to be Sabah’s official language indefinitely. Other clauses also promised local control over immigration, finance, education, land and natural resources. Furthermore, the east Malaysian bumiputeras are to enjoy the same special rights as peninsular Malays. Many east Malaysians, therefore, thought that they were coming together to form a whole new country.

Fast forward to 2010, these facts, however, appeared to have been forgotten. Neither the 20 nor 18-points have been fully honoured, arguably undermined by successive federal leaders. Indeed, their existence has been relegated to little more than mere historical footnotes. To make matters worse, we are regularly told that “Malaysia” was born on 31st August 1957. “Malaysia Day”, as a-matter-of-fact, was only declared a national holiday last year when peninsular Malaysia leaders realised the dangers of ignoring east Malaysian sentiments. The sad truth is that the state of our union is imperfect and 47 years after its actual formation, Malaysia’s founding ideals remain elusive.

Our development policies and ideas of nationhood are biased towards the peninsula. Indeed, many peninsular Malaysians are more familiar with London or Sydney than Kota Kinabalu or Kuching.
In the meantime, the aspirations of our fellow east Malaysians — whether they are Bumiputera, or Chinese — have consistently been ignored.

How did this happen?

Many east Malaysians mark their problems from the ejection of Singapore as it weakened their negotiating positions. Federal leaders have been seen as having failed to honour the original spirit of the Malaysia agreements. These differences have led to a different sense of Malaysian-ness across the South China Sea. Their stated preference of many east Malaysians for 16th September as the “national day” underlines these differences. Furthermore, disputes over the rights to natural resources and native customary land, as well as religious disputes and questionable immigration policies have heightened dissatisfaction.

Even the New Economic Model (NEM) targets seem impossible for Sabah to achieve. The federal government aims to lift the nation’s US$7,700 average per capita annual income to US$15,000, but Sabah’s own figure stands at only US$3,000 per annum. Still, the two states have avoided west Malaysia’s ugly racial polarisation. This lack of progress on core issues has been a source of disappointment as well as frustration for east Malaysians. Nevertheless, one can detect the winds of change blowing.

Up until the 2008 general election the Barisan Nasional (BN) was content to rule as if Sabah and Sarawak were mere appendages of Putrajaya. Now, however, the BN is dependent on the east Malaysian parliamentary seats to retain power. Once-dubbed the BN’s “fixed deposit”, the Sibu by-election has changed all this. Sabah and Sarawak are up for grabs and both the BN and Pakatan Rakyat need to craft substantive policies for these two critical states. Indeed, many see the impending Sarawak elections as a key indicator for the next polls. The fate of Chief Minister Taib Mahmud — does he go or fight on — then becomes a question of national importance.

If the BN wants to maintain its hold on east Malaysia, it has start redressing 47 years of neglect. This takes more than just granting holidays or constant reassurances of goodwill. Sabah and Sarawak deserve their share of the nation’s wealth and attention. Furthermore, the respective points of agreement have to be adhered to. The resources of these two states must reach the ground directly. The political elites in Sarawak and Sabah have gorged themselves while the people have suffered.

In Malaysia such naked abuse of power and greed will be met with defeat sooner or later.

So My dear fellow Sabahan & Sarawakian-it is time to make a CHANGE!

A Burning Lamp

To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it.

-- Blessed Teresa of Calcutta

P.s: My reflection for today, as long as i persevere in my prayer and keep on my heart open for Lord Jesus to work within me without close it again, the beautiful friendship with Him will never fade, will never end. Reading His Holy Words and continue shared His love with people i met is the oil that i need to put in the lamp so that the light of Jesus in my life will never fade or off. Keep on burning allowing the Holy Spirit to work in my life. Thank God for a beautiful Eucharistic Mass today. God bless us all and Peace to the World!!

ROAR For the Tigers

0

I have been joining YouthSays 12 months ago. Wow..a year ago but i did not active in this site. With all the campaigns and rewarded it's offers. I get so many emails and notifications from Yuna from YouthSays about all these campaigns. So, here i found one of the campaign that i feel like to support it though. It is about the cause that created by World Wildlife Fund - Malaysia. I think they have a few of programme like Tx2 (WWF's Tx2 campaign aims to put in place the necessary conditions to double the wild tiger population by the next Year of the Tiger in 2022) and a lot more on awareness of the current status of tigers in the world.

So, YouthSays are promoting one of the initiatives called ROAR For the Tigers. This is a little bit info that they provide for this campaign.

In the last 10 years we have lost almost half of all wild tigers. Tigers are in deep trouble and they need your help!
No petitions need to be signed, we just need your ROARING voice to spread awareness!
Just as tigers have their own unique roars, you can come up with a creative roar of your own. We are their only hope so let your ROAR be heard!
Just click on the link above and be part of this campaign.

Boring weekend because of tiring day yesterday. A long journey Sipitang-Kemabong-Sipitang-KK-Sipitang....so, get headache because of rain last night in Sipitang. Woke up and sleep again. Thought of joining ALPHA seminar at church but just can't do it. Since my car was so dirty because of flood in Beaufort last Friday so i have to clean my dear beloved car (So kesian owh my car...nda kena kasi peduli). At last need to go to Sipitang and make sure my dear car clean this time. Almost one hour spend time at car wash and i am thankful to all the boys that wash my car. They did an excellent job. My car is clean now. Thank God at last i make time to go to car wash.

That is the only good thing that i did for today and also get clear of weeds at my little garden. Opss... sorry, my story is away from the title of this post. Sorry guys... He he.. Am just trying to tell you guys that since i am doing nothing today, so i am trying a few layout for this blog. He he... Like this one but there are a few things that i am not so happy with. For example the colour for comments and tags under the post. The color is almost the same with the layout background but anyway, i am satisfied with other widget that i can easily add to this layout. But i lost my signature at the end of my post and also FB badge. Will try to add it again after this.  However, this one is not mess like the other two that i tried. I get these layout from Blogger Templates. One of the free blogger templates website that i like. Here is the other two of layout that i tried but not really suit me.

Harmony template
Irene template
At last i choose this next template among these three. These two above, is difficult to adjust some of widgets that i add to my blog. I don't want to delete the widgets so i am lucky the last of these three can support the widgets that i have in my blog. This is it:

Notebook 2.0 template
So, that is the story about new layout template for my blog. Hope you guys like it too. I like it though... :-)
Have a great weekend ya!!!

What So Special About Today? 20.10.2010

2

Not so much special things happen. The best thing so far for today is, i am not having problem with sleepy mode in the office today. I didn't take my 3 in 1 coffee but only Kopi "O". Good day for that.

Went back home and working on my little garden. Aiyah, my garden is so messy now. The weeds and grass is higher than some of the veggies. Work on it till dark, but still can not finish it all. Hope i can continue working on it tomorrow. Lady fingers seems to be grow well but need to water it everyday because the weather is very hot now.

Just after i finish my gardening and watering the plants, i saw Munah is sitting not far from me. I didn't notice that she was observing me doing my work in the dark. So, after washing my hand i played with her for a while. She is not that active like before and not so naughty like before. She seems to be more quite now. But. still we play a little bit before i ask her to go back home and i am done too.

That's all for the day of 20.10.2010... (^___^)

Sleepy Mode - In Office?

2

I have a problem. This problem is not new for me. It started since i am in schools. Secondary schools i think because in primary i didn't face this problem. Aiyah! I easily fall asleep. Anywhere. That is my problem. So embarrassing sometimes but i just can't help it. My eyes just want to rest for a while.. he he he...

This problem i carry through till now, till i am working. What should i do ah? Need help. :"(...

From my own observation, there are a few factors that makes this sleepy things become more serious.

  1. Not enough sleep especially when i am too much travel and my body get tired. Not enough rest also lah bah tu.
  2. Too much sugar intake. This must be because of my addiction to coffee. I took three times 3 in 1 coffee everyday.. Hmmmph...
  3. No exercise. Aiyah... it has been a while i didn't do any sports. Hmm...no woner i become so malas now. Duh!

So, that's is what i think. How to overcome this? Need to do some experiment first ya. Will see if i can make any improvements.

  1. To get enough sleep and rest.
  2. To reduce my sugar intake. Reduce my coffee??? huhhu....
  3. To go and exercise. Will do some aerobic at home al after this.
That's it for now guys. Any ideas to help me?

P.s: Kamek tok macam-macam gelaran dah diberik sejak dari skul gara2 selalu gilak tdo dalam kelas & dewan kuliah time2 study lok.. huhuhu

Igan River Our Source of Life - Water is Life

5

In my previous post I did mentioned about the disaster in Rajang River and its tributary, Igan River. My village is along the Igan River. I think most of you know about the tragedy of Rajang River. The news appear in most of the newspaper local and internationally. I just want to share a few things about my village and how important is the Igan River for us living there.

Just a brief background about my village. My village is named Kampung Kebuaw based on the name of Kebuaw River. The people living here is mostly Melanau (Christian). The population maybe around 500 people (just my random estimation, for correct one, ask the District Office of Dalat/Daro??). Our village has NO ELECTRICITY SUPPLY, NO CLEAN WATER SUPPLY, NO ROAD (whether gravel road or asphalt road). You can see that three of the most important basic necessities are not provided by Sarawak government to our village (WHY????? I am not sure what is the main problem of the rural area development in our area – not listed in the federal/state budget??? – I don’t know). From this you can see that WHY IGAN RIVER is almost everything for us. We need IGAN RIVER for our connection to the nearest small town of Dalat and to Sibu town. First, IGAN RIVER is our needs for TRANSPORTATION. Second, since we don’t have clean water supply from the government, we rely so much to the RAINWATER and IGAN RIVER WATER supply. However, the water from Igan River is not clean and the colour is like “teh susu”, so we only use this water for our washing, bathing and for our plants (especially paddy). The main source for our drinks and consumption is from RAINWATER. Life is difficult without water from Igan River because if we use rainwater for bathing and washing we will not have enough water for our consumption. Third, FOOD SOURCES. Igan River provide us with fish, prawns, snails, nipah fruits etc. Our kampong having an estuary ecosystem so, sometimes fishes and prawns from the marine/sea enter our river. That is a little bit here and there about the importance of IGAN RIVER for us living at Kampung Kebuaw.

Alright, what impact did the disaster at Balleh River really affects us? Last night I call my mother. I just want to know how their condition at home is right now. The news I heard from her is really really make me sick and disappointed. She told me that the logs and wood debris is all over our river and the smells of the river is not that good because of the dead fish and other animals. The other thing is that, the water is soooo muddy. She didn’t dare to wash her cloths using the water because it will not clean it but makes the cloths dirtier. But they didn’t have other choices but to take a bath using the water because it is not raining so, no rainwater to use for bathing. However, she needs to keep the water in the container for a while till the entire mud settle at the base of the container. She is surprise of this incidence because since she is born in the village (she is born in 1942), nothing like this ever happens to this river.

So, that is the story I want to share for today. How disappointed I am with this thing happen to our source of life. Even though I am not there to see and experienced it by myself but I did know how it is feel when there is no clean water to be use there, at my home, Kg. Kebuaw.

P.s: To the Sarawak government especially CM, please step on the ground and live in the real world. Curses and curses by people of Sarawak that suffering because of your governance will not make you sleep peacefully at night. It will become nightmares for you, in your entire life.

But, I am a Catholic and I believe that there is always time for repentance and forgiveness. You will be in my prayer and all of us hope you will change for good and for our people of Sarawak.

Dear God, change this man heart, may his heart will be filled with full of love and compassion with other people around him especially all people of Sarawak under his governance. For you there is nothing impossible. Thank you Lord. Amen.

Love,

P.s: A good reminder for ourself. Sometimes if only by words, we tend to forget easily but if someone teach us and get us involved that we learnt and never forget. And another good one is, if we make mistakes and we learnt well from it, "Learn from mistakes".

My Presentation & Disaster at Batang Rajang/Igan

2

Sorry for no update on what is actually happen after my presentation. A group of about 28 students from UMS were visiting us with three of UMS staffs. One lecturer was leading this group.

I was asks by my boss to do presentation on Ecosystem Management & Conservation. Phewww!!! This is actually one of the course taken by Conservation Biology students in UMS for third year and final semester. I've taken it too during my study in UMS. Now, i have to tell these group of students on how our company practice contribute to ecosystem management & conservation. Quite tough but since this company is following the standards for forest certification so there were not that difficult for me to explain to them.

However, i was stunt because just a day before my presentation i was tagged by my friend in one of his photo. This photo was showing Batang Rajang/ Rajang River is jammed because of logs and wood debris. It's moving down river until reaching my kampong at Batang Igan/ Igan River. To read more about this see The Star Online.

Here is the photo that my friend tag me:

I am so disappointed and ****** (no words can express it) because i know my kampong is affected because of this tragedy. I can't imagine when i am going back kampong end of this year, the water will become more polluted and for sure, i will not enjoying my "mandi sungai @ bebarok" with my nieces and nephews. Pity for us.

Photo taken in Dec 2007. Water level is high and my niece & nephews enjoying their mandi
Okay, enough about this disappointing bad news. However, i still hope that CM learn something through this bad experience. Will he? Hmmm.... not sure though!

Back to my presentation then. Here is our group photo after i finished with my presentation. I do hope that i gave an usable input for them and they lean something from it.

Till then, i leave you guys here!

Aerobic Dance

4

Feel like want to do some aerobic dance but don't know where and how. At last search online video from You Tube and i get some ideas. I really miss my old days back to 2007-2008 in Bintulu where my friend and I keep on attending aerobic class at D'Oasis. When i am moving to this new work place, they have aerobic group but it's too many people attended it and most of them are housewives. Never mind, here is some videos that i found that i may want to follow it for my own aerobic at home.. ha ha ha.. at last i decided to do it by myself at home. Learn how to do some steps and who knows i can make another aerobic groups for single working ladies. Okay, here is some of my selections:

Preparing For My Second Presentation

4

Jarang-jarang bah aku tok molah presentation. Sejak ku kerja sitok rasanya baru sekali aku polah presentation tapi ya untuk staff kedirik jak. Nok kali tok aku kena molah presentation untuk orang luar (UMS students). Ya la palak ku rasa bengong jak, lack of confident bah kali aku tok. Dengan tajuk nok bombastic la juak, dah la ku rasa aku tok macam 'retired conservationist' dah. Setahun lebih dah ku tinggalkan bidang kesukaan ku tok and memilih untuk jadi 'kuli orang kampung'. He he he... Nok ney best gik? Duak2 keja tok pun ada thrillnya kedirik. Cabaran nang sik sama tapi tahap gaban sibuk nya nang lebih kurang jak.

Kenak ada gambar di sebelah ya? Sebab, aku mun dah stress molah keja mesti maok minum kopi. Seolah2 kopi ya booster kepada idea la konon. Tapi masalahnya, mala jak ku rasa dehidrated after ku minum kopi, mesti mok minum air kosong sekurang2nya secawan or dua cawan after ku minum kopi. Mok kasi neutral kandungan caffiene dalam badan lah kali tok... Mun sik nang rasa kering/dehidrat bah...

Bebalit ngan crita mok polah presentation tok. Adei esok agik ya. Nasib la ada bos and kawan2 nok merik komen and idea giney mok polah slides ku lebih menarik and info pun betul. Lak ku berik info salah, sian juak ngan nembiak ya suma. Biar ajar benda nok betul nak. Bah, rasanya ya jak la dolok. Ku nyambong keja gik lok. Mok ngechek and praktis pa mok di elaborate ku esok. Nasib juak present petang. Boleh la aku ilek2 isap gam lok pagi esok. Ha ha ha..

P.S: If we are not sure or having doubt with something especially in our job, don't be shy to ask for guidance. It is nothing to be ashamed of asking for help. In the process of learning, asking question and guidance is no harm. Be humble on the ground and don't think when you have experience on the task, you are good and great. Learning is a long process, and maybe it is in our whole life. Oh ya! Don't forget to drink a cup of coffee... (",)

I need a 15 minutes break. Need to sip my favourite coffee, Old Town White Coffee.

My brain can't think of what else to put in this presentation. It is a 3 hours talk and can i just talk nonsense? Ha ha ha... Nope, can not do that. Let the CHRIST LOVE overflow in you;
share it with people most in need of it.

P/s: Yesterday i am a little bit upset when i am arriving home after spend almost my whole day convincing kampong people to keep on working hard to make their socio-economic (handicraft) group success. Then, this morning i realize that, if i let the LOVE of CHRIST overflow in me like the water overflow from the glass, i must have so much love to be shared with people that i met each and everyday of my life journey. Serve with love and the joy will come back to me. Praise the Lord for always walk with me.

Be Grateful

Let us be grateful to everything in our life that makes us happy;
those are the greatest things that make our souls blossom, each and everyday.

-- Little Rose

P/s. Being grateful in everything that we have is not easy because nowadays, we never felt anything that we have ever enough. When we get more, we want more, so when is it enough?

Pepatah atau Perumpamaan?

2

Murah hati maka murah rezeki bah ni pak cik sefamili. Wife dia punya suara memang rock.

Kalau dah kasi makan, mencuri pulak, lain lah cerita. Kena halau ja la dari rumah kita"...

First time saya dengar perumpaan begini o tapi interestingkan? What do you think?

St. Francis of Assisi Feast Day

2

The prayer of St. Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Today is the feast day for St. Francis of Assisi. I am a conservationist, ecologist (i may say) and lover of animals and nature so St. Francis is one of my favorite saints because he is the patron of animals, merchants and ecology. Since today is his feast day i would like to share some of his story and biography. Just to make he known to more people (i know, he is already well-known but maybe some of us not sure about his life). The article here is adapted from Catholic Online, one of my favorite online Catholic websites. Here it is:

Founder of the Franciscan Order, born at Assisi in Umbria, in 1181.

In 1182, Pietro Bernardone returned from a trip to France to find out his wife had given birth to a son. Far from being excited or apologetic because he'd been gone, Pietro was furious because she'd had his new son baptized Giovanni after John the Baptist. The last thing Pietro wanted in his son was a man of God -- he wanted a man of business, a cloth merchant like he was, and he especially wanted a son who would reflect his infatuation with France. So he renamed his son Francesco -- which is the equivalent of calling him Frenchman.

Francis enjoyed a very rich easy life growing up because of his father's wealth and the permissiveness of the times. From the beginning everyone -- and I mean everyone -- loved Francis. He was constantly happy, charming, and a born leader. If he was picky, people excused him. If he was ill, people took care of him. If he was so much of a dreamer he did poorly in school, no one minded. In many ways he was too easy to like for his own good. No one tried to control him or teach him.

As he grew up, Francis became the leader of a crowd of young people who spent their nights in wild parties. Thomas of Celano, his biographer who knew him well, said, "In other respects an exquisite youth, he attracted to himself a whole retinue of young people addicted to evil and accustomed to vice." Francis himself said, "I lived in sin" during that time.

Francis fulfilled every hope of Pietro's -- even falling in love with France. He loved the songs of France, the romance of France, and especially the free adventurous troubadours of France who wandered through Europe. And despite his dreaming, Francis was also good at business. But Francis wanted more..more than wealth. But not holiness! Francis wanted to be a noble, a knight. Battle was the best place to win the glory and prestige he longed for. He got his first chance when Assisi declared war on their longtime enemy, the nearby town of Perugia.

Most of the troops from Assisi were butchered in the fight. Only those wealthy enough to expect to be ransomed were taken prisoner. At last Francis was among the nobility like he always wanted to be...but chained in a harsh, dark dungeon. All accounts say that he never lost his happy manner in that horrible place. Finally, after a year in the dungeon, he was ransomed. Strangely, the experience didn't seem to change him. He gave himself to partying with as much joy and abandon as he had before the battle.

The experience didn't change what he wanted from life either: Glory. Finally a call for knights for the Fourth Crusade gave him a chance for his dream. But before he left Francis had to have a suit of armor and a horse -- no problem for the son of a wealthy father. And not just any suit of armor would do but one decorated with gold with a magnificent cloak. Any relief we feel in hearing that Francis gave the cloak to a poor knight will be destroyed by the boasts that Francis left behind that he would return a prince.

But Francis never got farther than one day's ride from Assisi. There he had a dream in which God told him he had it all wrong and told him to return home. And return home he did. What must it have been like to return without ever making it to battle -- the boy who wanted nothing more than to be liked was humiliated, laughed at, called a coward by the village and raged at by his father for the money wasted on armor.

Francis' conversion did not happen over night. God had waited for him for twenty-five years and now it was Francis' turn to wait. Francis started to spend more time in prayer. He went off to a cave and wept for his sins. Sometimes God's grace overwhelmed him with joy. But life couldn't just stop for God. There was a business to run, customers to wait on.

One day while riding through the countryside, Francis, the man who loved beauty, who was so picky about food, who hated deformity, came face to face with a leper. Repelled by the appearance and the smell of the leper, Francis nevertheless jumped down from his horse and kissed the hand of the leper. When his kiss of peace was returned, Francis was filled with joy. As he rode off, he turned around for a last wave, and saw that the leper had disappeared. He always looked upon it as a test from God...that he had passed.

His search for conversion led him to the ancient church at San Damiano. While he was praying there, he heard Christ on the crucifix speak to him, "Francis, repair my church." Francis assumed this meant church with a small c -- the crumbling building he was in. Acting again in his impetuous way, he took fabric from his father's shop and sold it to get money to repair the church. His father saw this as an act of theft -- and put together with Francis' cowardice, waste of money, and his growing disinterest in money made Francis seem more like a madman than his son. Pietro dragged Francis before the bishop and in front of the whole town demanded that Francis return the money and renounce all rights as his heir.

The bishop was very kind to Francis; he told him to return the money and said God would provide. That was all Francis needed to hear. He not only gave back the money but stripped off all his clothes -- the clothes his father had given him -- until he was wearing only a hair shirt. In front of the crowd that had gathered he said, "Pietro Bernardone is no longer my father. From now on I can say with complete freedom, 'Our Father who art in heaven.'" Wearing nothing but castoff rags, he went off into the freezing woods -- singing. And when robbers beat him later and took his clothes, he climbed out of the ditch and went off singing again. From then on Francis had nothing...and everything.

Francis went back to what he considered God's call. He begged for stones and rebuilt the San Damiano church with his own hands, not realizing that it was the Church with a capital C that God wanted repaired. Scandal and avarice were working on the Church from the inside while outside heresies flourished by appealing to those longing for something different or adventurous.

Soon Francis started to preach. (He was never a priest, though he was later ordained a deacon under his protest.) Francis was not a reformer; he preached about returning to God and obedience to the Church. Francis must have known about the decay in the Church, but he always showed the Church and its people his utmost respect. When someone told him of a priest living openly with a woman and asked him if that meant the Mass was polluted, Francis went to the priest, knelt before him, and kissed his hands -- because those hands had held God.

Slowly companions came to Francis, people who wanted to follow his life of sleeping in the open, begging for garbage to eat...and loving God. With companions, Francis knew he now had to have some kind of direction to this life so he opened the Bible in three places. He read the command to the rich young man to sell all his good and give to the poor, the order to the apostles to take nothing on their journey, and the demand to take up the cross daily. "Here is our rule," Francis said -- as simple, and as seemingly impossible, as that. He was going to do what no one thought possible any more -- live by the Gospel. Francis took these commands so literally that he made one brother run after the thief who stole his hood and offer him his robe!

Francis never wanted to found a religious order -- this former knight thought that sounded too military. He thought of what he was doing as expressing God's brotherhood. His companions came from all walks of life, from fields and towns, nobility and common people, universities, the Church, and the merchant class. Francis practiced true equality by showing honor, respect, and love to every person whether they were beggar or pope.

Francis' brotherhood included all of God's creation. Much has been written about Francis' love of nature but his relationship was deeper than that. We call someone a lover of nature if they spend their free time in the woods or admire its beauty. But Francis really felt that nature, all God's creations, were part of his brotherhood. The sparrow was as much his brother as the pope.

In one famous story, Francis preached to hundreds of birds about being thankful to God for their wonderful clothes, for their independence, and for God's care. The story tells us the birds stood still as he walked among him, only flying off when he said they could leave.

Another famous story involves a wolf that had been eating human beings. Francis intervened when the town wanted to kill the wolf and talked the wolf into never killing again. The wolf became a pet of the townspeople who made sure that he always had plenty to eat.

Following the Gospel literally, Francis and his companions went out to preach two by two. At first, listeners were understandably hostile to these men in rags trying to talk about God's love. People even ran from them for fear they'd catch this strange madness! And they were right. Because soon these same people noticed that these barefoot beggars wearing sacks seemed filled with constant joy. They celebrated life. And people had to ask themselves: Could one own nothing and be happy? Soon those who had met them with mud and rocks, greeted them with bells and smiles.

Francis did not try to abolish poverty, he tried to make it holy. When his friars met someone poorer than they, they would eagerly rip off the sleeve of their habit to give to the person. They worked for all necessities and only begged if they had to. But Francis would not let them accept any money. He told them to treat coins as if they were pebbles in the road. When the bishop showed horror at the friars' hard life, Francis said, "If we had any possessions we should need weapons and laws to defend them." Possessing something was the death of love for Francis. Also, Francis reasoned, what could you do to a man who owns nothing? You can't starve a fasting man, you can't steal from someone who has no money, you can't ruin someone who hates prestige. They were truly free.

Francis was a man of action. His simplicity of life extended to ideas and deeds. If there was a simple way, no matter how impossible it seemed, Francis would take it. So when Francis wanted approval for his brotherhood, he went straight to Rome to see Pope Innocent III. You can imagine what the pope thought when this beggar approached him! As a matter of fact he threw Francis out. But when he had a dream that this tiny man in rags held up the tilting Lateran basilica, he quickly called Francis back and gave him permission to preach.

Sometimes this direct approach led to mistakes that he corrected with the same spontaneity that he made them. Once he ordered a brother who hesitated to speak because he stuttered to go preach half-naked. When Francis realized how he had hurt someone he loved he ran to town, stopped the brother, took off his own clothes, and preached instead.

Francis acted quickly because he acted from the heart; he didn't have time to put on a role. Once he was so sick and exhausted, his companions borrowed a mule for him to ride. When the man who owned the mule recognized Francis he said, "Try to be as virtuous as everyone thinks you are because many have a lot of confidence in you." Francis dropped off the mule and knelt before the man to thank him for his advice.

Another example of his directness came when he decided to go to Syria to convert the Moslems while the Fifth Crusade was being fought. In the middle of a battle, Francis decided to do the simplest thing and go straight to the sultan to make peace. When he and his companion were captured, the real miracle was that they weren't killed. Instead Francis was taken to the sultan who was charmed by Francis and his preaching. He told Francis, "I would convert to your religion which is a beautiful one -- but both of us would be murdered."

Francis did find persecution and martyrdom of a kind -- not among the Moslems, but among his own brothers. When he returned to Italy, he came back to a brotherhood that had grown to 5000 in ten years. Pressure came from outside to control this great movement, to make them conform to the standards of others. His dream of radical poverty was too harsh, people said. Francis responded, "Lord, didn't I tell you they wouldn't trust you?"

He finally gave up authority in his order -- but he probably wasn't too upset about it. Now he was just another brother, like he'd always wanted.

Francis' final years were filled with suffering as well as humiliation. Praying to share in Christ's passion he had a vision received the stigmata, the marks of the nails and the lance wound that Christ suffered, in his own body.

Years of poverty and wandering had made Francis ill. When he began to go blind, the pope ordered that his eyes be operated on. This meant cauterizing his face with a hot iron. Francis spoke to "Brother Fire": "Brother Fire, the Most High has made you strong and beautiful and useful. Be courteous to me now in this hour, for I have always loved you, and temper your heat so that I can endure it." And Francis reported that Brother Fire had been so kind that he felt nothing at all.

How did Francis respond to blindness and suffering? That was when he wrote his beautiful Canticle of the Sun that expresses his brotherhood with creation in praising God.

Francis never recovered from this illness. He died on October 4, 1226 at the age of 45. Francis is considered the founder of all Franciscan orders and the patron saint of ecologists and merchants.
